The ten-board field guide: reading GitHub trends as signals
Official Trending only answers who is hot right now. The Hot Board splits that into ten lenses: all-time giants for the foundation, weekly and monthly boards for momentum, annual newcomers and the 90-day slope for how fast the new kids climb, dark horses and overlooked gems for what slipped through, the controversy index for drama, fork champions for ecosystem reach, and a live milestone board watching the 1k / 10k / 50k / 100k crossings.
Read boards against each other: a repo rising on both the weekly and the potential board is likely real growth; appearing only on the controversy board while absent from newcomers is more likely noise. Every repo has an archive page — the 30-day rank curve separates steady climbs from one-night spikes.
Ranked by what our snapshots measured: the star difference between each repo first and latest snapshot of the week. ones the official list caught before us are listed at the bottom as new faces.
Same method as the weekly board: star difference between the first and latest snapshot in the window. Snapshots started on Oct 22, so the 30-day window fills out in late November — until then the number means the measured gain over the window covered so far.
Strictly excludes mainstream giants already charted on the All-time (Top 1000), Weekly, Monthly, and Annual leaderboards. Ranks the strongest emerging contenders by net weekly gains.
The metric is a ratio: stars gained this week ÷ stars already there. The same +1,000 puts a 500-star repo at +200% ahead of a 100k-star one at +1% — dark horses are about velocity, not size. Repos under 10 stars at window start are excluded (one star = 100%, pure noise).
Strictly excludes repositories on the major boards. Focuses on active projects between 100 and 6,000 stars with rapid star growth velocity and ongoing code commits.
Index = (forks × 2 + open issues) ÷ stars, extremes among repos with over 3000 stars. It measures the structural tension of “attention far exceeding endorsement”. A heuristic, not a sentiment analysis. The candidate pool is the all-time top-500 board filtered to ≥3000 stars — a comparison inside the hall of fame, not a platform-wide scan.
Every ~6 hours we search for active repos sitting within ±80 stars of four milestone thresholds (1k, 10k, 50k, 100k). The page polls every minute; if a line is crossed, a celebration animation and a “milestone reached” toast appear.

How is this different from official GitHub Trending?
Trending shows the moment. The Hot Board adds rank history, a controversy index, per-day slopes and a board for actively-maintained-but-overlooked repos — ten lenses that confirm or contradict each other, so you can see whether the hype has bones.
Where does the data come from?
Public data only: the GitHub Search API and the official Trending pages. Every board states its rules on the page; when a rule breaks, the page says so instead of quietly switching numbers.
How often does it update?
The pipeline ingests every ~6 hours, the page re-reads the list every minute, and the milestone board flags whatever crossed its line in the latest snapshot. If a snapshot runs late, the updated chip turns red.
Sixteen interface languages; row descriptions follow each repo's own localized README when available. Every entry links to its archive page.
