The Controversy Index
Index = (forks × 2 + open issues) ÷ stars, extremes among repos with over 3000 stars. It measures the structural tension of “attention far exceeding endorsement”. A heuristic, not a sentiment analysis. The candidate pool is the all-time top-500 board filtered to ≥3000 stars — a comparison inside the hall of fame, not a platform-wide scan.

Methodology & data notes
Is this index scientific?
No, and it does not pretend to be. It is a structural proxy: repos that get widely copied (forks) or endlessly questioned (issues) while earning few stars usually live in a polarized spotlight.
Why do issues include PRs?
GitHub’s open_issues field itself includes pull requests. We do not subtract them and we say so.
